Setting up a business in Ireland has only gotten easier over the last 10 years. There are more agencies to support you now more than ever, and more money is being ring-fenced for businesses that want to start or scale up.
This is supported by the latest report out from Ibec on Irish Business EU Policy Priorities for 2024-2029. They cover a large area of points ranging from regulation, implementation, investment and all the way through to social policy, infrastructure and more.
The Local Enterprise Office (LEO) is an obvious go-to for many startups and scaleups and they have a variety of financial supports that you may be eligible for. A good place to start would be to visit the “What Grants Are Available from the LEO” page on the main website.
It does depend on the type of industry you are in, and there is a criterion you must abide by, but funding can be offered to sole traders, Limited companies and partnerships.
The grants available are as follows:
Digital for Business
The ultimate aims for this are to help small enterprises leverage digital technologies to improve their operations and competitiveness. Support is available for developing digital strategies, enhancing online presence, and implementing e-commerce solutions. By embracing digital tools, businesses can reach wider audiences, improve customer engagement, and drive sales growth.
Grow Digital Voucher
This is for small and medium businesses with > 50 employees who need financial support to embrace digital technology. The business must have completed a Digital for Business and had a report within the previous two years.
A grant of > €5,000 to invest in software and training/IT configuration. 50% of eligible costs (Min €500, Max €5K). Businesses can apply for 2 max. (with approval) of these Grow Digital vouchers and the value won’t exceed €5,000.
The intent is to obviously boost efficiency, reach new customers, and stay competitive. Get full details here.
Priming Grant
Start up (<18 months): employing 10> staff, Ireland/International, for International Trading Services and manufacturing. For equipment/business costs. Max 50% investment up to €80K -> €150K (case by case). Get full details at the above link.
Business Expansion Grant
Growth (18> months): employing <10 staff, must not have applied for Priming Grant in the last 12 months previously, grant must not exceed 50% of investment - €150K (whatever is less, case by case). Get full details in the above link.
Feasibility/Innovation Grant
Start up / scale up: Aid with business research / sustainability. Includes innovation, consultancy fees and technical development. Regional differences ranging from 50-60% with a max of €15K. Get full details in the above link.
Agile Innovation Fund
You may qualify for support for research and development and innovation funding. Available to eligible manufacturers and internationally traded service companies. Used for new or improved products, services, or processes for <€300K. It is intended for companies who are new to RD&I, operating in short, product life cycles and undertaking small or short projects.
Technical Assistance for Micro Exporters (TAME) Grant
The TAME grant is for microenterprises to help them explore and develop new export market opportunities. It covers up to 50% of qualifying expenses, up to a maximum of €2,500 (ex. VAT). Eligible costs include participation in trade fairs, development of marketing materials, translation services, and the creation of export-related websites. This support is designed to help businesses take their first steps into international markets.
GradStart
GradStart assists businesses in attracting graduate talent to deliver specific projects aligned with their growth plans. The program offers financial support of €30,000 (€15,000 per year) or 50% of the graduate's salary costs (whichever is lesser) for a two-year contract. For graduates with language proficiency, the support increases to €42,000 (€21,000 per year) or 70% of salary costs.
Lean for Micro
The Lean for Micro programme is designed to help small businesses adopt lean business principles to increase performance and competitiveness. It provides expert mentoring to identify and implement improvements in productivity, waste reduction, and overall efficiency. Participating businesses can achieve significant cost savings and enhance their market position through streamlined operations.
Green for Business
We all recognise the importance of sustainability. The Green for Business programme assists companies in preparing for a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy. It offers support to identify cost savings through improved environmental practices, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable resource management. This programme not only benefits the environment but also enhances business profitability and reputation.
Export Supports
If you want to enter or expand in international markets, the LEO offers a range of export supports. These include access to a panel of export mentors, the Technical Assistance for Micro Exporters (TAME) grant, Trading Online Vouchers, and participation in the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). Additionally, businesses can benefit from the GradStart programme and Microfinance Ireland Business Loans to support their export activities. These supports are designed to equip businesses with the knowledge, resources, and financial assistance needed to succeed in global markets.
Shopfront Enhancement Grant Scheme
This scheme provides financial assistance to businesses aiming to improve the external appearance of their premises. Enhancements can include painting, signage, lighting, and other aesthetic improvements that contribute to the overall streetscape. A well-presented shopfront can attract more customers, enhance brand image, and contribute positively to the local community's appeal.
Microfinance Ireland Business Loans
In partnership with Microfinance Ireland, the LEO facilitates access to business loans for micro-enterprises (businesses with fewer than 10 employees) that may be unable to secure funding from traditional banks. Loans of up to €25,000 are available, with favourable terms and conditions. This support aims to provide vital financial resources to help businesses start, grow, and sustain their operations.
Energy Efficiency Grant
The Energy Efficiency Grant supports businesses in implementing measures to reduce energy consumption and costs. Eligible projects include upgrading lighting systems, improving insulation, and investing in energy-efficient equipment. By reducing energy usage, businesses can lower operational costs and contribute to environmental sustainability.
Research, Development, and Innovation Supports
The LEO offers supports to encourage businesses to engage in research, development, and innovation activities. These supports can assist in developing new products, services, or processes that enhance competitiveness and open new market opportunities. Investing in innovation is crucial for businesses aiming to stay ahead in dynamic markets.
Enterprise Ireland Supports
For businesses with high growth potential, Enterprise Ireland provides a range of supports, including funding for startups, expansion plans, and research and development activities. They also offer export assistance, competitiveness supports, and incentives to stimulate in-company R&D. Enterprise Ireland's services are geared towards helping Irish companies achieve export sales growth and international success.

The mentoring they have offered over the years has been pivotal for many businesses. It’s enabled business owners to gain the skills, insight, and fortitude to keep and maintain their livelihoods for a great deal longer.
Each mentor is selected on the skills and knowledge they possess and, on their ability, to work well with others. You can reapply as often as you need and you can have up to 9 hours of mentoring with various mentors as required.
