Many business owners find it beneficial to be on LinkedIn. It's a platform to share your knowledge and your successes. For quite some time now it has much moved on from being just a CV. Many people now use it as a fabulous marketing tool and it provides a very valuable backlink to your website.
You do still need to make it easier to be found though and that is why it is essential you claim your URL in LinkedIn.
As you are using this profile as a Marketing tool, make sure you complete it in an advertorial way, rather than like a CV. Complete each section taking into account what your audience wants to know about you.
Make sure you link any articles you have written or indeed links with ones written about you.
Have you got a couple of fresh recommendations for your products or service? Might be worth asking clients to do ones for you.
Make sure you have an up-to-date image as well, if you're changed hair colour or wear glasses now as an example.
Once that is all done it's time to claim your url.
Ensure you're in your Own Profile and go to the top right hand corner and click into Edit Public Profile and URL
Once in the Edit Profile screen you will see again in the top right hand corner the Edit Your Custom URL.
Click into this field box and see if your chosen name is available and if it isn't maybe go for a number afterwards. I know some people who have added perhaps a location or maybe an industry type, but if you move or change career it's something that will need updating again.
Once you have confirmed this and are happy, then make sure you share your LinkedIn profile widely. Maybe add it to your business cards and website. The more approachable and accessible you are the greater chance you have of getting someones business.
