Podcasting is one of the many ways our audience consumes our information and not just a trendy form of content creation.  People learn through visual, auditory, auditory digital (Auditory is the actual sound. Auditory digital involves the meaning of words and symbols) and kinaesthetic methods and we need to hit as many of these mediums to improve our chances of being found.

Everyone in our audience will process information utilising all four of these approaches at different times, but people will individually rely on one of these approaches more than the other three.

For small business owners, it’s a powerful way to build authority, connect with your audience, and ultimately drive more sales. If you've been thinking about starting a podcast but aren't sure where to begin, this guide will walk you through each step of the process, highlight essential tools, and give you an idea of the costs involved.

Plan Your Podcast Strategy

Before you hit the record button, you need a clear strategy.Ask yourself:

  • What is the purpose of your podcast? (Brand awareness, lead generation, customer education, etc.)
  • Who is your target audience? (Industry peers, potential clients, or hobbyists in your niche.)
  • What topics will you cover? (Think of pain points your audience faces and how your business can offer solutions.)
  • How frequently will you publish? (Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly — consistency is key.)
  • How much time will you have to devote to this? (Can you maintain the pace you're planning to do?
  • Will you need to get some extra training in tools? (Do you know how to edit a podcast?

Choose a Podcast Format

Decide on the format that’s right for you and your brand:

  • Solo shows—You're the only speaker, perfect for sharing expertise and being seen as the go-to.
  • All Interviews — You bring on guests to provide fresh insights and build a bit of banter
  • Co-hosted shows — a casual, back-and-forth conversation with a co-host.
  • Swop Formats – You may want to do a mixture of you and a guest!

Pick the format that aligns with your goals, schedule, and of course, your comfort level.

Gather Your Podcasting Tools

You don’t need a full recording studio to start a podcast, but having the right tools can make a big difference in quality. I would suggest setting aside some budget for updates and upgrades as well.  Here’s what you’ll need:

Hardware

  • Microphone: USB microphones are affordable and easy to use. Examples include: some text

    • Blue Yeti (€120-150) — Excellent quality and versatile.
    •
    • Audio-Technica ATR2100x (€80-100) — Affordable and good for beginner.
  •
  • Headphones: Use headphones to monitor your sound while recording. Budget options include: Audio-Technica ATH-M20X (€50) — A solid, entry-level option.

  • Ones that come with your laptop!
  •
  • Pop filter: Reduces unwanted "p" and "s" sounds (€10-15).
  • Microphone stand/boom arm: Keeps your mic stable and at the right height (€20-50).

Software

  • Recording software: Options include: some text

    • Audacity (Free): Simple and effective editing software.
    •
    • Adobe Audition (€20/month) — For advanced editing.
  •
  • Podcast hosting platforms: You’ll need a host to publish your podcast. Popular     options include: some text

    • Buzzsprout (€12-20/month)—simple and beginner-friendly.
    •
    • Spotify for Podcasters (Free) — Great for getting started with minimal costs.

Set Up Your Recording Space

You don’t need a studio, but you do ideally need a quiet, echo-free space. To improve sound quality, consider:

  • Recording in a room with soft furnishings (carpet, curtains, cushions) to reduce echo.
  • Using acoustic foam panels (€30-50) if you want a more professional setup.
  • Turning off any noisy appliances like air conditioners and fans and move pets away!

Plan and “Script” Your Episodes

Start by outlining the structure of each episode. You can script the whole thing if you wish, but it sounds more natural if you just ad lib from the questions you have created. Maybe bullet points and this can keep you on track.  All “ums” and “ahs” can easily be edited out. Consider the following:

  • Intro: catchy opening music, an introduction, and a welcome message.
  • Main content — Discuss the main topic in an engaging way.
  • Call-to-action (CTA): Encourage listeners to visit your website, follow you on     social media, or join your email list.
  • Outro — sign-off music and a final goodbye message.

Record Your First Episode

To ensure high-quality audio, keep these tips in mind:

  • Do a short test recording to check for issues with sound quality, volume, or background noise.
  • Speak clearly and naturally. If you make a mistake, pause and start the sentence again.
  • Use    headphones to monitor your voice as you record.

Edit Your Podcast

Post-production is where you turn raw recordings into polished episodes. Use software like Audacity or Adobe Audition to:

  • Cut out mistakes or long pauses.
  • Add   intro and outro music (make sure it’s royalty-free).
  • Balance the audio levels so the volume is consistent.

Editing can take time, but tools like Descript (from €12/month) can make editing as simple as editing text.

Publish Your Podcast

Once your episode is ready, you’ll need to upload it to a podcast hosting platform like Buzzsprout or Spotify for Podcasters. The hosting service will then distribute it to platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.

Promote Your Podcast

Getting listeners is crucial and frankly where the hard work really begins. Here’s how to promote it effectively:

  • Share it on social media — Highlight new episodes and share behind-the-scenes content.
  • Embed episodes on your website — Drive traffic and improve SEO.
  • Email your subscribers — Use your email list to notify listeners of new episodes.
  • Leverage guests' audiences — Ask guests to share the episode with their network.
