Social Media Round Up July 2016

Social Media Round Up - July 2016

Happy August all!

The July Social Media Round up has incorporated events as there are some doozies coming up.

I have had the most chilled and sunny July I can remember!  It’s great to be off the networking circuit for a short while and spend time with the family – but social media waits for no one!  So what has changed this month I hear you ask.

There are new targeting options available through Facebook that you may not have come across yet.  It is very much for the Facebook Ads connoisseur so if you are already using Ads Manager and/or Power Editor this is a titbit from Marketing Land you may have missed out on, have a read.

Facebook have finally made a change I really like and I look forward to seeing my new profile page and its new layout.  Check out the Mari Smith post I shared above.  Have you got it yet?  What do you think of the change?

Mari also shared a post about the best image size for Facebook Page Cover dimensions.  As you know when people view your page on mobile it can make images look a bit skewed, so make sure you update them as soon as possible to keep a slick, professional look.

Posting on Facebook and Twitter at the Same Time

I am making this an entire separate section in order to make it easier to find.  Michelle Duffy Rudden of Breffni Digital wrote this brilliant article last month and I just needed to share.  I always recommend clients not do it, it is completely different platforms with different audiences and it leaves it looking untidy in my opinion.  Have a read and if you do link them, please consider changing it.  Michelle even leaves the link handy for you to remove the link!

Pokemon Go

OK, this isn’t really social media per se, but some people have been asking me about it and frankly I haven’t looked into too much as it’s not my field of expertise but I did find this article useful and it helped me decide NOT to add it as yet another platform for me to be on.  Are you on it?  Is it all it’s cracked up to be?  I’d love to hear your opinions on this, tell me in the comments section below.

Events Coming Up

As you may know I know Samantha Kelly aka Tweetinggoddess pretty well and I always go to her events!  Well her next event is coming up on the 5th of October called From Kitchen Table to Building an Empire through the Womens Inspire Group she manages and is being held at the City North Hotel in Gormanstown.  The speakers are impressive and will bring a wealth of information on the day.  Click the link above and book your ticket soon as these always sell out quickly.  Use the code “womensinspire” for €10 off.

I have been going to Learn Inbound events for the past couple of years and have always found them really enjoyable and extremely well organised.  If you want to hear from the pro’s on what makes your Inbound Marketing tick then this event is for you.  Book your Early Bird tickets here.  It is on the 19th of October at the Olympia in Dublin.

Blogs to Read

I have selected a couple that really got me thinking.  Make sure you comment on their blogs where you can and give them some feedback!

Hootsuite have put out some tremendous blogs up recently but this is one I thought you might like as it’s something I feel strongly about also. The Two Things People Hate Most about Brands on Social Media.

My friend Marie Collins of DigiPulse Marketing put up this brilliant blog post called 3 Winning Improvements for your Facebook Business Page which I am sure you will find very handy.

I know this July’s post has leaned a little heavily on Facebook this time but let’s see what August brings out.  Enjoy!

  1. Hi Melanie,

You hit on a lot of great points here. I’m really loving the new facebook page layout and have been doing so much more with ads lately. I as well don’t like the account linking for facebook and twitter. For me, it just makes it look a little lazy to do so and you are correct that they are completely different platforms with different audiences so that’s another reason! Pokemon Go is the talk of the town and all over social media. I have an 11 year old daughter who has the game on her phone and I’m hearing so much about it everywhere I turn online! Happy August!

  2. Thank you for the up date, I’m a bit behind with it all with the kids being off school.

  3. I noticed the change to my FB fan pages yesterday. Now, I need to change my covers because they were designed with the photo covering the bottom left portion. Now, it looks empty.

  4. Thanks Genience! I just got my new layout today actually, very crisp and I like it!

  5. Yes I have seen a few gaps in others profiles too. I guess it will take some time for all of the pages to be updated. What do you use? Canva?

  6. Lol! know that feeling! I normally blog through the month but just struggling with the kids off! Only 3.5 weeks to go!

  7. Love the roundup article and what you covered. My FB biz page layout just changed yesterday finally. Now my graphic looks half-empty! Wonder if Canva will update the header template? (Let’s hope yes!) I agree that using the same content across multiple platforms doesn’t look good and is less effective. Nice review!

  8. Thanks for all the updates. Handy to have in one place, and I have had the new layout for a few months. Still not used to it.

  9. Great post, Melanie. I completely agree on not linking Twitter and Facebook. I always think it’s a bit odd to tweet to FB and vice versa.

And while I’m not playing Pokemon Go, my kids sure have been loving it. They’ve been all over town–and the one away at college reported that it seemed like everyone on campus was out having fun, meeting new people and “catching ’em all.”

  10. Thanks for the tips. And I agree to never post automatically from FB to Twitter. Samantha Kelly is great, I follow her too.

  11. Love this roundup article. Social media changes so much. I have my fb page linked to Twitter and don’t know how to remove the link as a VA connected it years ago. I’ll take a look at the article and remove it. I do have Pokemon Go and admit it can be addicting. I think companies can really use it to their advantage though.

  12. The article you shared about Facebook and Twitter posting to each other is so helpful to me. I have some friends who do this, and it’s a pet peeve.

  13. I’m glad you found it useful 🙂 Thanks for you commenting!

  14. Lol – I am spending far too much time on Pokemon Go. I can see ads and branding definitely becoming a part of it in the months to come.

  15. I agree Celea, that’s why being in this business really suits me! I love rapid and great changes in social media 🙂

  16. Yes she is fab, really love working with her too, great to get on with!

  17. Aw thanks Marie! I love how it’s a game that brings people together, just wish it stayed free! 🙂

  18. Thanks for sharing this Melanie. I hate it, especially when people share tweets that get posted on Facebook at the same time. Looks awful and inappropriate

  19. Thanks for sharing, I’m still getting used to the new Facebook layout. It can be difficult to keep up with all the changes for each platform. Sounds like you are on top of your game!

  20. Cheers Max, I appreciate you popping over 🙂

  21. I love doing the round ups in general, I like making hese updates accessible to everyone and making it as easy as possible to bring the right content to my readers! Thanks for your comment Holly 🙂

  22. I’ve found a lot of people feel the same way Apolline, I guess it’s what we did way back when we started but now as there are so many apps out there that can take the strain off scheduling its just not seen as the done thing any more.

  23. Thanks so much for a great roundup. So many thing change on social media all the time and it is great to read all of the updates in the same place.

  24. Thanks Stacey, appreciate you taking the time to read and comment!
